Research: Design methods and tools; design for manufacturability; mechanical system design and analysis.

Engineering design methodologies that help to optimize the manufacturing system as a whole. Design for manufacture and assembly. Product architecture, modularization, and standardization. Conceptual design methods, especially as they relate to coordinated design of the product and manufacturing process. Design for casting. Design theory and methodology.

In the classroom

Professor Stoll teaches the basic ME manufacturing processes course, the basic ME
CAD/CAM course, Engineering Design and Communication (EDC), and other ME design courses. He has recently developed and started teaching two new courses: ME 316 Mechanical Systems Design and IDEA 344 Manufacturing Engineering Design. The Mechanical Systems Design course focuses on principles of efficient design with applications to mechanism design and precision engineering. The Manufacturing Engineering Design course covers topics such as production and assembly line design, automation design, lean manufacturing, product design for manufacture and assembly, and design for quality. Professor Stoll also teaches Design for X (design for everything) in both the Masters of Product Development (MPD) program and the Masters of Manufacturing Management
(MMM) program.
