Catalog description

Special studies to be done under faculty direction. Credit to be arranged.

Who takes it

Students working on individual research projects with faculty can often obtain credit for their research by signing up for 399 units. Details of required goals for the quarter need to be worked out in advance with the faculty member so that credit can be given and graded. Only two units of 399 may count toward the 300 level Tech Electives graduation requirements. Design competition students typically register for 399 units during their work on their project.

What it's about

ME 399 provides a chance for undergraduate students to be meaningfully involved in research throughout their undergraduate career! You can obtain course credit for your work in the lab at the 300 level, so that research experience is integrated and not just done in your "spare time". How to find research to do? Talk to ME faculty, maybe one that is teaching one of your courses. Or just browse the web to see what ME faculty are doing on research - then contact them to see if you can work on a project in their group. Most faculty are excited to include you in their research teams.
