Doctoral Student Joseph Schaefer Receives ASME Graduate Teaching Fellowship

Joseph Schaefer, currently a PhD candidate at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, is the recipient of a graduate teaching fellowship from ASME. The ASME commitment is for an annual stipend of $5,000 to be used in conjunction with a full teaching assistantship awarded in your department. The fellowship is intended to encourage outstanding graduate students, especially those who are underrepresented in the Mechanical Engineering professorate, to pursue an academic career. As a Predictive Science and Engineering Design Fellow at Northwestern, Mr. Schaefer is pursuing a PhD in the field of composite mechanics, nano-enhanced composite characterization, and applied theoretical mechanics. He has authored or co-authored ten publications in journals such as Carbon, Thin Solid Films, Composites Part B and Experimental Mechanics, and the proceedings of SAMPE and SEM. His current focus regards the strain-rate dependent behavior of composite lamina and the development of the Northwester Failure Theory for composites.

Joseph was recognized at the recent ASME’s International Mechanical Engineering Education Leadership Summit that was held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. When asked about the conference he remarked, “A truly exciting climate exists for engineering education and industry relations in the coming years; I'm thankful to have had the opportunity to take part in various proposals here at the Northwestern University in support of them (particularly the advanced manufacturing initiatives).”
