Week  1

Thurs Jan 4
What is mechatronics? Example systems and architecture. Basic circuits review: current and voltage sources, resistance, capacitance, inductance, constitutive laws, Kirchoff's current and voltage laws.

Week  2

Tues Jan 9 Basic nonlinear elements: diodes and transistors. Prep reading: A&H 2.1-2.5, 2.7, 3.1-3.4
Wed Jan 10
Lab 0:  Building a simple alarm system
Thurs Jan 11 Nonlinear circuit elements (cont).

Week  3

Tues Jan 16 Nonlinear circuit elements (cont) 
Wed Jan 17 Lab 1: Push-pull motor driver.
Thurs Jan 18 Nonlinear circuit elements (cont) 

Week  4

Tues Jan 23 Op-amps:  inverting and non-inverting amps, buffers,
Wed Jan 24 Lab 2: Op amps, sensors, and closed-loop motor control.
Thurs Jan 25 Intro to Simulink and xPC, op-amps, sensor gallery and start signal conditioning

Week 5


Tues Jan 30 Continue signal conditioning, Quiz 1 (45 minutes)
Wed Jan 31 Lab 3: DC motor control with an encoder using the PC/104 stack, xPC, and Simulink.
Thurs Feb 01 Motors

Week  6

Tues Feb 06 More motors: Stepper motors, servo motors, PWM with xPC/Simulink. Prep reading: A&H Chapter 10.6.
Wed Feb 07 Lab 4: PWM for DC motors; driving steppers and servos.
Thurs Feb 08 Motor sizing. Power transmission: gears (rack and pinion, spur, planetary, worm, bevel, crown, harmonic) and belt drives; torque, speed, and power equations, efficiency, inertia, reflected inertia, inertia matching. Prep reading: A&H 10.7.

Week  7

Tues Feb 13 Power transmission (cont).
Wed Feb 14 Lab time: Project consultation.
Thurs Feb 15 Digital design and integrated circuits. Combinational and sequential. A/D, D/A, counters, timers. Prep reading: A&H Chapter 6, 8.3, 8.4.

Week  8

Tues Feb 20 Student project presentations
Wed Feb 21 Lab time: Project consultation.
Thurs Feb 22 Quiz 2 -- full class period

Week  9

Tues Feb 27 Image processing in MATLAB -- highspeed camera demonstration
Wed Feb 28 Lab time: Project consultation.
Thurs Mar 01 Digital circuits (cont).

Tues Mar 06 Electrical noise, isolation, grounding, shielding. Reading: A&H 2.9-2.10,
