Professor
BS, University of Illinois at Chicago
MS, PhD, California Institute of Technology
Currently, he is a Professor of Mechanical and Civil Engineering at Northwestern University.
His research activities include development of numerical methods, computer simulation models, finite element methods and deterministic and probabilistic computational methods and design, and applications to fluid and solid mechanics, structural mechanics, heat transfer and coupled problems, and metal forming. Currently, Dr. Liu is investigating novel methods, which are based on multiple scales and reproducing kernel methods, smooth particle hydrodynamics, and wavelets, as an alternative to the study of highly nonlinear problems which involve multiple scales and localized physical phenomena.
His research developments led to his receipt of the 1995 Gustus L. Larson Memorial Award from ASME, the 1989 Thomas J. Jaeger Prize, International Association of Structural Mechanics, the 1985 Pi Tau Sigma Gold Medal from ASME, the 1983 Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award from the American Society of Automotive Engineers and the 1979 Melville Medal from ASME. He is elected to a Fellow of ASME in 1990, ASCE in 1993 and USACM in 1995.
Dr. Liu serves as an Associate Editor for the ASME Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology and the ASME Journal of Applied Mechanics, and the Manager Editor of Computational Mechanics. He is the chairman of the ASME Computing in Applied Mechanics Committee, the Secretary (1995-1996) and the President Elect (2000-2001) of the United States Association for Computational Mechanics (USACM).
Dr. Liu has published 5 edited books and over 200 papers in journals and proceedings.
