Steered Mirror

Jim Lipsey and He Zhu used the voice coil actuators of two loudspeakers to control two axes of motion of a mirror. A rod was attached to each loudspeaker cone and to a swivel attached to the mirror

A laser reflected off the mirror could be steered to create a pattern as directed by a computer
The motion of the voice coil was measured by an LED/photodiode pair, and a feedback control loop in the computer adjusted the current to the loudspeaker to acheive the desired displacement.
